What are the main differences between Tier II and Tier III Data Centers in terms of design and operational resilience?

I’m new to Data Center design and often hear about Tier classifications from Uptime Institute. I understand they indicate reliability, but can someone explain in simple terms how Tier II and Tier III differ, especially in design, uptime expectations, and redundancy levels?

Tier II data centers have backup equipment (called N+1 redundancy), but they usually use only one path for power and cooling, so maintenance or failures can cause downtime. Tier III data centers also have N+1 redundancy but add multiple power and cooling paths, allowing maintenance to be performed without shutting down servers. This ability, called "concurrent maintainability," makes Tier III much more reliable and reduces annual downtime from about 22 hours to about 1.6 hours.
